Beyond the Playlist — What an Auckland Corporate DJ Should Actually Do
A True Example of Why Passion and Experience Matters
At Westpac staff awards night, I noticed a walk-up song that didn’t feel quite right.
It was an instantly recognisable 70s toe-tapper. But what made it really stand out was that it was the signature song of a MAJOR advertising campaign – for a different bank. It was in every TV and radio ad the competitor was running at the time.
I could have just played the song, just followed the playlist. A “Just-Press-Play” DJ possibly would do as they’re told without caring enough to wonder.
Was the bank just being bold? Maybe they were trying to portray fearless dominance, mocking the competitor.
Perhaps it was an inside joke, like the recipient of that award being an ex-staffer of the competing bank.
Or maybe it was a huge, embarrassing, potentially career-limiting mistake.
One polite question from me — ‘Are you sure about this one?’ — helped them dodge a big brand blunder. That single detail saved the planner’s credibility.
They booked me every year after that.
Auckland Corporate DJ — What “Professional” Actually Means
The corporate events industry has its own rhythm. Award nights run to tight schedules. Brand launches have stakeholders watching every detail. End-of-year parties need to feel earned, not generic. The music, the volume, the transitions between formality and celebration — all of it requires judgment, not just a playlist.
I’ve worked corporate events across Auckland and the North Island for over 20 years — from intimate VIP dinners to large-scale awards nights with hundreds of guests. That experience means I understand venue acoustics, AV coordination, and the unspoken expectations of corporate clients in a way that takes years to develop.
If you’re researching what to look for when hiring a DJ for your corporate event, this checklist covers the key questions worth asking before you commit to anyone.
Need an MC Too?
If your event needs someone to guide the evening, make announcements, or keep the night flowing — I can help.
While I will always refer to notes, a script or a guide, I’m not a newsreader. But I know how to keep a crowd informed, engaged, and on track — without making it about me.
My background in live radio taught me how to stay calm under pressure, keep things moving when plans change, and strike the right tone for the room.
Think of me as your laid-back, professional co-pilot — clear and confident on the mic, alert in the moment, and there to make you look good.
“Nick’s the kind of MC who knows exactly what to say — and more importantly, when to shut up.”
